Sunday Rewind: How to find out what your customers want by Janet Bumpas

This week’s Sunday Rewind is a 2023 ProductTank Oslo talk, in which product consultant and coach Janet Bumpas explains the key aspect of a product hero: building a product that customers love.

Janey says customers don’t want more features. She cites an internal Microsoft study where teams found their ideas had improved metrics they meant to address only one third of the time, one third of the time there was no improvement, and for the remaining third they had actually made matters worse.

What customers say and do can be two separate things. Talking to customers is a key part of product management, and Janet reiterates that generating a hypothesis can only be fruitful when you confirm it with market-based validation. She explains the four-step process to validate your product: risky assumption; prioritise; minimum criteria for success; test.

Janet concludes by saying that to be a product hero, you must go into the market and understand what customers want and do.
