This week’s Sunday Rewind takes us back to a 2022 post from Finnish product designer <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/lassial/?originalSubdomain=fi" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Lassi Liikkanen</a> that runs through five steps to getting engaged with product strategy.
The first step is to digest the business strategy, says Lassi. This means starting with observations of what pieces of strategy are offered “top-down” from the rest of the organisation and looking at how the company is organised &#8211; hierarchies, amount of autonomy and so on.
Next you should establish the product vision. Says Lassi: “Vision is intended to be a more stable element than strategy because navigating to the goal of your vision will likely be a long journey that requires several adjustments—revisions of strategy—on the way. Strategy will likely be updated every year or two, vision less frequently.”
The next step is to set the base ingredients for the product strategy.
Step four is to focus, and Lassi runs through some examples of how to proceed with this.Finally you should put the strategy into practice and assess its success.
He concludes by saying that product strategy work is about securing product success by making sure you are focused on doing the most important things.
